Common concern
Back pain: rehabilitation in Astana
Does your lower or upper back hurt after exertion, long sitting or for no clear reason? Here are the common causes and when it is time to book a visit.
What it is
Back pain is one of the most common reasons to see a doctor. Most often it involves the muscles, ligaments and small joints of the spine and is “non-specific”: there is no single cause visible on a scan.
Complete rest is not always needed with back pain: doctors often recommend staying as active as you can. A doctor will decide what suits you after an examination. The signs that need urgent care are listed below.
Common causes
This is not a diagnosis: a doctor will name the exact cause after an examination.
- Overloaded muscles and ligaments: long sitting, lifting heavy things, sudden movements
- Herniated and bulging intervertebral discs
- Pain radiating to the leg or arm — when a nerve root is irritated
- Posture problems and scoliosis
- Sports overload of the lower and upper back
- Back pain during pregnancy and after childbirth
When to book a visit
- The pain lasts longer than a week or two, or keeps coming back
- The pain radiates to your leg or arm, or you feel tingling
- The pain gets in the way of work, sleep or training
- After an episode of acute pain you want to understand how to lower the risk of the next one
- A doctor found a disc herniation and recommended rehabilitation
When you need urgent care
Do not wait for an appointment — seek urgent care (103 or 112) if:
- Numbness in the groin or saddle area, problems with passing urine or stool
- Weakness in a leg or arm is quickly getting worse
- Pain after a fall, a blow or a road accident
- Back pain with a high temperature, sudden weight loss or a history of cancer
- Severe back or chest pain that is not related to movement
How we work
First consultation — 60 minutes: history, examination, neurological and movement tests and a review of your scans, if you have any.
If tests are needed to make a decision, the doctor will tell you which ones and why.
Plan: exercises, manual techniques and treatments — matched to the cause of the pain and your lifestyle.
Load increases step by step; repeat tests show what is changing, and the plan is adjusted.

Frequently asked questions
- Should I stay in bed while my back hurts?
- Long bed rest is usually not recommended for back pain. The doctor will tell you how much you can move after examining you — especially if you have any of the urgent signs.
- Do I need an MRI straight away?
- Not always. A scan is needed when a decision depends on it. If a test is needed, the doctor will tell you which one and why.
- Do you work with scoliosis?
- Yes, the clinic has a specialist in scoliosis and posture problems who uses the Schroth method. Scoliosis is a separate concern: the front desk will tell you whom to book with.
- Can I do sport with a disc herniation?
- It depends on your symptoms and the sport. Often you can keep training with a changed load; the decision is made after an examination.
