Common concern
Knee pain: rehabilitation in Astana
Does your knee hurt after training, an injury or for no obvious reason? Here are the common causes and when it is time to book a visit.
What it is
The knee is a large joint that carries much of the load when you walk, run, squat and jump. Knee pain can be acute — after an injury or a sudden movement — or gradual, building up over weeks of training or everyday load.
The same pain can have different sources: ligaments, menisci, cartilage, tendons or the muscles around the joint. That is why we do not diagnose from a description — a doctor will name the exact cause after an examination.
Common causes
This is not a diagnosis: a doctor will name the exact cause after an examination.
- Ligament and meniscus injuries — for example, a sharp twist on a planted leg
- Tendon overload from running and jumping (tendinopathy)
- Pain at the front of the knee when the kneecap is loaded unevenly
- Changes in joint cartilage, including age-related ones (osteoarthritis)
- Recovery after knee surgery: ligament reconstruction, meniscus procedures, joint replacement
- Weak or unbalanced hip and thigh muscles
When to book a visit
- The pain lasts longer than a week or two, or comes back with activity
- The knee swells after training or a long walk
- Painful clicking, a feeling of instability or the knee “locking”
- Pain makes it hard to go down stairs, squat or run
- You are recovering from an injury or surgery and want to return to sport
When you need urgent care
Do not wait for an appointment — seek urgent care (103 or 112) if:
- After an injury you cannot put weight on the leg, or the knee is visibly deformed
- The knee suddenly becomes swollen, red and hot, especially with a fever
- The leg below the knee goes numb, cold or changes colour
- Your calf suddenly swells and hurts — especially after surgery, a long drive or a flight
How we work
First consultation — 60 minutes: history, examination, movement tests and a review of your scans, if you have any.
If tests are needed to make a decision, the doctor will tell you which ones and why.
Rehabilitation plan: exercises and treatments are chosen for the cause of the pain and your goal — from everyday activity to sport.
Load increases step by step; repeat tests show what is changing, and the plan is adjusted.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need scans before the first visit?
- Not necessarily. If you already have scans or reports, bring them along. If a test is needed, the doctor will tell you which one and why.
- Can I train if my knee hurts?
- It depends on the cause. Complete rest is not always needed, but pushing through pain is not a good idea either. A specialist will choose a safe load after examining you.
- Do I need surgery for a meniscus or ligament injury?
- The doctor decides based on the examination and test results, often together with a surgeon. If surgery is needed, we lead rehabilitation before and after it.
- How long does rehabilitation take?
- It depends on the cause, how long ago the injury happened and how the plan is followed. The doctor will give you an estimate after the first consultation.
